RAW DIET UPDATE

Spellbound Collies is doing ongoing research on a raw diet. On many occasions we have attempted to migrate our collies onto a raw diet. Most of our collies LOVE the taste and are very eager. As we get closer to the time when we begin breeding, the benefits of a raw diet seem to outweigh any of the negatives we have heard of. The primary downside of a raw diet, is some people have reported that dogs are choking or having trouble with splintering bones (even though the experts tell us raw bones are soft and will not cause this problem), it is still being reported or some have trouble digesting the larger raw bones chips they consume. In lieu of this, we have decided to make out own raw diet. This will consist of range-fed meat or poultry, raw veggies, finely chopped/pureed bones and tripe. This will provide all of the benefits of a raw diet, without the risk of the possible problems associated with a raw diet. The consistency will be similar to chopped eat. There will not be any larger bone fragments to cause problems.

We will be offering this raw food mixture which we will sell (and ship) frozen. Initially, we are offering this to those who purchase our dogs/puppies, but stay tuned, we may be offering this for sale to the public in the very near future. However, those who are interested can make this mixture easily at home on your own.

We do recommend supplementing the diet with Wysong's Call of the Wild Food Supplement.

We also suggest introducing a raw diet very slowly. Many dogs will develop loose stools at the beginning, so don't be alarmed and don't think this means they can not tolerate a raw diet. Since they are so used to a processed diet, it does take the body some time to adjust. We recommend introducing a pea-sized portion of the raw diet mixture for a day or so, and then double to a portion the size of 2-peas, and once you have your dog(s) adjusted to these small portions, every other day slightly increase. It may take you weeks or months to migrate to a raw diet, but that is ok.

The raw food I will be selling is frozen and can be kept in the freezer for months. We will offer small size loafs. Products and pricing will appear on this website in the spring of 2002. Please check back often for updates.
