Research Updates from the Purdue University
Prospective Study of Canine Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV)
October 22,1999
1999 On Saturday, October 16,1999, Dr. Larry Glickman gave a
talk at the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation,
National Parent Club Canine Health Conference, in St. Louis,
Missouri. The title was Incidence and Breed-Related Risk Factors
for Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV) in Dogs: The Purdue
University Five-Year Prospective Study. In this talk he
characterized the clinical features of GDV and showed how the
incidence had increased in dogs by more than 1500% over the past
30 years. This was followed by a description of the methods used
to conduct the five-year prospective study and a statement of the
objectives. After presenting the results, Dr. Glickman cautioned
that they were still preliminary and speculated on their
significance. Finally, Dr. Glickman answered questions raised by
several breed representatives. We have included the published
abstract of the talk for your information.
The first official report of the Purdue Prospective Study has
been accepted for publication in the Journal of the American
Veterianry Medical Association. We are hoping that this will
appear in press within the next 6 months. Until that time, the
above abstract of the study is all we are permitted by the
journal to release at this time. As soon as it is published in
the Journal of the American Veterianry Medical Association,
copies will be sent to all eleven of the participating breed
clubs for distribution.
We are currently preparing a second manuscript for submission
to a journal. This second article will describe the findings
related to risk factors for GDV in individual dogs. We are also
working hard to determine what specific types of foods or
ingredients in commercial dog foods or table foods contribute to
bloat. This will take a longer period of time to sort out given
that for the more than 1600 dogs in the study, owners reported
feeding at least 150 brands and types of dog foods. For each one
we need to track down the content and then calculate the daily
caloric intake of each food in terms of carbohydrates, fat,
protein, the sources of protein, type of fat preservative, kibble
or particle size, fiber type and amount, etc. This is a great
challenge and we are feeling our way with help from veterinary
nutritionists. As soon as we have some findings to share, we will
post them on this web site.
Thanks to everyone for the continued support. We would like to
take this opportunity to thank those clubs and individuals
who supported this effort over the past year.
Sincerely,
Larry Glickman
