Vaccination Information

I want preface this section to again state that Spellbound Collies is not endorsing any one platform or making any health or medical recommendations.  This information is being presented to give you a well-rounded viewpoint of animal health.  We hope you will review and consider this information to make educated and informed decisions.

The AVMA Council on Biologics and Therapeutic Agents (COBTA) presented their consensus at the July, 2000 137th Annual AVMA Convention. They focused on the following points:

When an annual booster vaccination with a modified live virus vaccine (i.e. Distemper , Parvovirus or Fe Distemper) is given to a previously vaccinated adult animal - no added protection is provided. Modified live virus vaccines depend on the replication of the virus for a response. Antibodies from previous vaccines do not allow the new virus to replicate. Antibody titers are not boosted , more memory cells are not induced. No additional protection is provided.(23)
* Vaccine Manufacturers label claims should be backed by scientific data. There is no scientific data to support label directions for re-administration of MLV vaccines annually.(23)
Vaccinations are important for the prevention of diseases. Annual physical exams at the time of vaccination help improve health by the early detection of treatable disease and contribute to the overall quality of life.
Vaccines are not harmless. Unnecessary side effects and adverse events can be minimized by avoiding unnecessary vaccinations.
Virus drift is small. There are no new parvovirus strains and the virus in the vaccine has remained essentially the same.
Average pets are similar enough in their exposure to infectious disease and in their response to vaccines that we can have a Standard recommended Vaccination Protocol.
The AVMA Council for Biologics and Therapeutic Agents COBTA urges the USDA, Center for Veterinary Biologics to revise its standards for the licensing of animal vaccines and the USDA. CVB has agreed that this should be done.
Veterinarians need a standard procedure to report adverse events from vaccinations.

Catherine O’Driscoll has published an insightful book on the perils of vaccinating your pets (which I have read).  She has become a leader in the movement to not vaccinate at all.  I present the following article for your review.  The opening comments represent several opinions on vaccinations from vets and medical experts throughout the country.  The later part deals with Catherine’s thoughts, philosophies and recommendations.

One of the leaders in vaccination research is Dr. Jean Dodds.  She is one of the pioneers in recognizing the dangers of over-vaccinating an animal and has made strides at bringing this information to the attention of the medical experts who are embracing her research.  Many veterinarian colleges are changing their position on vaccinations. Here is a reprint of her revised vaccination protocol.  Please note that we are not endorsing this.  We are offering it as an alternative approach; amongst other articles presented here.

I personally do not follow this regime.  I do NOT give more than one type of vaccination at any given time; (i.e. when a parvo vaccination is given - no others are given at that time) and I would never give a Combo shot.  I also only use ‘killed’ vaccine.
